Addressing the Culture

Introduction

As followers of Christ, it is important that we engage the culture we are in. In order to engage the culture, we have to understand their worldview and how it affects their beliefs. Our modern culture has become increasingly difficult to understand with the internet and social media allowing the rapid propagation of ideas. We no longer live in a culture where the ideas are shared by most people. There are many different little pockets of people who hold beliefs unfamiliar to everyone else around them. These people create online communities and a shared culture.

The Ever Evolving Culture

Due to this quick propagation of ideas, it has become more difficult for Christians to understand the beliefs held by those they will actually interact with. If we only get the quick back-and-forth remarks from internet forums and social media, we can end up applying those beliefs to everyone around us who thinks differently than us. We end up creating a straw man argument against the people we could actually reach. Not only does this cause an issue, but the predominant positions that many take are quickly changing. If we want to be able to answer the questions of those we are witnessing to, we are going to need to keep up with the newer ways people are defending their positions. This becomes a full time job, and most Christians don’t have the time to keep up.

Addressing the Culture

There are some topics that are more important to address in a specific culture. For instance, Athanasius had to deal with the Arian heresy, and focused heavily on this quickly growing heresy in the church. In our time, there are several topics that are beginning to divide the church. There are many in the church that are being swayed by the arguments given by the world and applying them falsely to biblical teachings. It is our duty as the church to correct these false beliefs and to keep the body of Christ pure in its doctrine. With this in mind, Journey Community Church will be having a Wednesday night series to address these topics. If you are interested in the biblical perspective on feminism, abortion, government, vaccines, lgbtq, racism, and the woke church, I recommend you attend this series. It will be Wednesday nights from October 13th to November 17th, beginning at 7pm. If you are not able to attend because you are not in the local area, we will also be posting the recordings of the series to our podcast, which you can find on Anchor.

Conclusion

It is important we understand these topics and the objections raised by those who would oppose sound doctrine. If we are to uphold what God has taught us in His word, we cannot simply have a reactionary response to the world. We need to be well versed in what the bible says about these topics so we can defend our faith well. We hope to see you there!
